    FACILITY EXCELLENCE AWARD
  PAWLEYS ISLAND WASTEWATER
             TREATMENT PLANT
The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control has presented to Georgetown County Water and Sewer District’s Pawleys Island Waste Water Treatment Plant the Facility Excellence Award for 2008. This award is given annually in recognition of facility personnel who strive for excellence in the protection of the environment and that are meeting or exceeding all regulatory standards and customer expectations. The award was presented to the District at the South Carolina Environmental Conference that was held recently in Myrtle Beach. The facility was put into operation in 1990 and serves the approximately 30,000 residents in the communities of Litchfield and Pawleys Island. The plant is permitted to treat and purify 4.13 million gallons of wastewater daily. An upgrade, now in progress, when completed will expand that capacity to 5.5 million gallons per day.

All facets of the facility are considered and evaluated when selecting candidates for the award. These are broken down to include: the permitted size of the system, the sewer collection system, the annual facility budget, the number and experience of the personnel, the ongoing training programs, emergency response programs, all maintenance and related programs to the sewer collection system including all pump stations, and any pretreatment programs which may be in place.

The Georgetown County Water and Sewer District is a special purpose district created by the South Carolina Legislature in 1967. The District is governed by a seven-member board of directors appointed by the Governor upon recommendation of the legislative delegation. The District serves all of Georgetown County except the City of Georgetown and the Town of Andrews.
