Board Adopts 2010 Budget
Like many utilities across the County, the Georgetown County Water and Sewer District is faced with a wide range of increasing operational expenses. Costs related to water supply and wastewater treatment facilities have risen dramatically. Power cost is increasing by 30%; fuel costs to run vehicles, equipment, and emergency generators is a constant unknown; and, chemical costs, in some instances,  have increased by more than 80%. Additionally, because of the slowdown in the tourist industry, and other factors, revenues for the District are currently down more than 9%. The District, like many other local governmental entities, as well as individuals; has no choice but to tighten our economic belts. Accordingly, the Board of Directors has reduced the District’s 2010 annual budget, below the 2009 budget, by 6.0%. In some cases, hard choices had to be made, including reductions in personnel. At its June 11, 2009 Board of Directors Meeting and Budget Hearing, the Board of Directors adopted its 2010 budget in the amount of $13,367,317. This is a balanced budget with revenues forecasted at $13,371,947.

The Board is pleased to inform you that, as a result of these budget cuts, only very modest adjustments are planned in the District’s monthly service charges. In fact, when comparing current rates to the new rates, the average water customer will experience a 2.9%, or a 59˘ per month decrease, while the typical water and sewer customer will experience a 2.3%, or a 93˘ monthly increase, and sewer only customers will experience a 3.9%, or a 97˘ monthly increase.

The proposed monthly service charges, actually, are almost identical to what customers paid for these monthly water and sewer services in 2000. These increases are less than the cost of one bottle of water.

                                                                                      (2000)                     (2010)
Water and Sewer (6,000 Gallons)
$40.14                     $40.61
Water Only (6,000 Gallons)                                              $19.64                     $19.79
Sewer Only (6,000 Gallons)                                              $25.30                     $25.51

We are pleased that the District has been able to keep rates stable over the last 10 years. And, we are pleased that we have been able to sustain some of the lowest rates in our region, and in the County.

It is important to note, that other changes include updating fees for specific services, such as meter taps and installations, to reflect the increased costs for materials and labor. There is also now a minimum usage of 2,500 gallons of water and/or sewer.

As always, Georgetown County Water and Sewer District strives to supply our customers with the best quality services at the lowest practical cost. We thank you for your support.
